The San Antonio Soaring Society is a non-profit club founded to provide soaring opportunities and training in the San Antonio Texas area. With incredible help from Robert Bruce, owner of the Boerne Stage Airport, and the support of other pilots on the airport - SASSi has grown into a vibrant group with two club gliders, a tow-plane, and a ground-launch winch.
Our assets are open to all club members, and available to the public for introductory "Discovery" flights. Scheduling of those assets is done via the club's scheduler at Aircraftclubs.com for members, or by contacting the Boerne Stage Airport front desk 830-981-2345 for interested newcomers.
The club meets once a month at Boerne Stage Airport, typically the second Saturday at 09:30. The meeting is open to everyone interested. And of course, opportunities to fly abound after these meetings!
SASSi members are mostly glider-pilots or tow-pilots. But our club does have other members who are not pilots, and merely enjoy riding along.
Full club members pay membership fees to enjoy the club assets. Temporary memberships for short-term visits to San Antonio are easily arranged. And student members, working on their first pilot certification, are offered a free membership period while pursuing their piloting goals.
Other glider pilots are always welcome at SASSi. Membership in SSA is required. And naturally, a check-out in the club's glider with one of our instructors is necessary. But after the formalities, other glider pilots are welcome to also enjoy the soaring in South Texas.
Powered-aircraft pilots who would like to experience flying without a engine, or who would like to expand their piloting skills are welcome to contact our club via the Boerne Stage front desk 830-981-2345 to schedule a introductory flight.
Introductory flights can be made with a Glider Commercial Pilot at a lesser cost, or with a CFI-G if you are considering pursuing a glider rating.
For those new to flying, or who would like to experience the sensation of Soaring for the first time - should contact the the Boerne Stage Airport front desk at 830-981-2345 to schedule your flight. These "Discovery Flights" are open on almost any day the weather will permit. Soaring is a quiet, very gentle, and peaceful way to fly - with no worries of noise, headsets, fuel worries, or engine problems!
The club offers different Discovery Flights to various altitudes, and flown to different styles (slow, easy, & gentle - or petal-to-the-floor, here I come!). We even offer a full-blown, acrobatic flight opportunity performing loops, barrel-rolls - as much acrobatics as your stomach will permit! And with most Discovery Flights, you're invited to fly the glider as much as you would like, under the supervision of a experienced pilot or instructor.
Adults and children who weight more than 120 pounds have the option of flying up front, or in the rear seat - as they feel comfortable. Smaller children, under 120 pounds, have to ride in the back seat - to meet the glider's balance requirement.
